Dumpster Hiding

  • crime

Overview

  • Nine common dumpster models can be used from within 2 metres; only one player can occupy a dumpster at a time.
  • Each dumpster receives a condition based partly on its area. Open, loose, heavy, rusted, and jammed lids can be entered after different skill checks.
  • Sealed, compacted, overfilled, and inaccessible-enclosure results cannot be entered.
  • A padlock can be opened with lockpick or advancedlockpick; a service lock requires advancedlockpick.
  • Hiding makes the player invisible outside, muffles nearby voices and world audio, and limits voice range to 3 metres.

Usage

  1. Target a dumpster and choose the entry option shown for its current lid condition.
  2. Complete the condition's movement check and entry progress.
  3. Stay hidden or press E to begin the 2.2-second climb out.

Entry timings:

  • Already open — 1.8 seconds, no skill check
  • Loose lid — 2.8 seconds, easy and medium checks
  • Heavy lid — 3.5 seconds, two medium checks
  • Rusted hinge — 4.3 seconds, medium/hard/medium checks
  • Jammed lid — 5.2 seconds, hard/hard/medium checks

Forced entry takes 6.5 seconds for a padlock or 8.5 seconds for a service lock before the lockpicking minigame. Both routes leave visible tampering and make noise within 18 metres.

Police response

  • Police, State Police, and LSSO can knock, pull an occupant out, or inspect a dumpster.
  • Inspection uses three staged skill checks and may reveal movement, sound, smell, disturbed trash, blood, fingerprints, or lock tampering.
  • Entering while bleeding can leave blood. Entering without gloves can leave fingerprints.
  • Tampering remains relevant for 20 minutes and general disturbance for 10 minutes.

Odor

  • Entering applies a trash odor for up to 45 minutes.
  • Continuous water exposure clears it after 12 seconds; rain clears it after 25 seconds.
  • The odor can be found during a police inspection even after the player has left the dumpster.
